Dave Green Mitsubishi EVO 3 Dandelion Yellow
Dave Green runs a sports and performance repairers in Beccles Suffolk Henstead Motorsport and has for the past 20 years, he has several years experience in modifying cars and also used to race an Mk 1 lancer 2002 turbo in the Production saloons.
Dave purchased the Evo late in 2005 as a fresh import from JPS trading in Norwich that he does work for, servicing and repairs and so on.
The car come to the workshop as a non registered vehicle for a Mot and a service, after closer inspection of the vehicle and from advise from a friend Dave decided to purchase the Evo as the dandelion colour had grown on him (this is a rare colour for the Evo3).
Next was a must do jobs list, new wheels and tyres, boost controller,de cat, fuel pump and the weak conrod bolts to be replaced by ARP ones.
This made the car a very quick road car and hopefully a good track car. Dave used the Evo as a daily driver, and had hours of fun in the car driving the family all over the UK. His interest grew again for a thrash around a circuit after watching a touring car event at Snetterton circuit in Norfolk.
Dave decided to do a track day at that very circuit Snetterton and booked a hopefully thrilling day. The day went well to start off with and hours of fun was had by both driver and passenger , until later in the afternoon the clutch let go. (this was the same day Phil Royale rolled his Subaru Impreza and was watched by me following behind).
Dave took the car back to Henstead Motorsport , and on Monday decided to strip the car down for inspection. As this was now late in 2005 and nearly winter Dave was in no hurry to fix the car and intended to have it ready by March or April of 2006.
Dave decided to do a full engine rebuild as he now had the trackday bug again and thought he would build a car especially for trackdays.
Dave discovered that the Mitsubishi Eclipse shared the same 4G63 engine found in all the early Evo's and all the parts could be sourced from the USA at a much lower cost than in the UK.
He found an Dsm in the USA that does 8.2 sec quarter miles and has in excess of 1000 bhp so he knew that they know their stuff. First up on the shopping list was the Wiseco forged pistons capable of handling up to 700 bhp then there was the Eagle forged con rods complemented with clevite 77 heavy duty bearings and a wiseco forged crankshaft (still a 2.0ltr).
Next up was the Toga oil pump, this was the high volume type as Dave wanted no problems with oil starvation on these trackdays. A larger oil cooler was also added. Then Dave removed the heavy balance shafts and added a lightened alloy pulley kit and a custom twin plate clutch and fly wheel made by HMS, the engine was then fully balanced.
Then next up was the cylinder head, 1mm oversize valves were added and some porting work carried out then HKS 264 inlet and 272 exhaust cams were added to complement the larger valves.
ARP head studs were used along with a Cometic 1.3 mm multi layer steel head gasket.
The turbo and manifold were replaced with a DNP tubular manifold and a GT35/40 dual ball bearing turbo capable of over 600bhp, also a Tial 44mm external wastegate was added. Dave made the exhaust system to suit, which exits from the side of the car through the bumper.
The alternator was moved to the rear of the engine to make space for the Tial wastegate.
A custom inlet manifold was made by Dave with custom 75mm throttle body also 1000 cc injectors were added, to control these Dave fitted and mapped a Greddy Emanage Ultimate piggy back engine management.
In the boot compartment Dave has added a fuel swirl pot and Aeromotive 800bhp fuel pump. Dave also mapped the standard ECU with a 9000 rev limit and launch control. A LM1 wideband was added along with Apexi boost controller.
A PWR charge cooler was added with custom pipe work and custom radiator to match. The engine mounts were made from solid nylon to cope with the extra power.
With al this extra power the gearbox needed to be strengthened, Dave went to PPG gearboxes in Australia and purchased a straight cut dog engagement gear set; this was a very costly experience as by the time the gearbox was finished the cost was around £4000.
The Cusco coilover suspension already on the car when purchased was capable enough for trackdays , so dave just changed the front springs, added some extra braces and some strut braces.
Polyflex bushes were added all round. The brakes were Made by Pete Colen of AP Racing as a one off kit as there was no kit available for the Evo 3 and dave wanted AP's.
Dave used Rota rims and toyo R888 tyres. The interior was stripped and sparco seats added along with Defi gauges. Dave also added a Cusco roll cage.
The car has done a few events in 2006, entering Tuner Grand Prix at Snetterton coming fourth in class and 14 overall and winning the drag competition. Quarter mile times are in the 11's.
Soon to be in the tens we hope, fingers crossed.
